World Championships Day 10 Preview
It’s the last day of the 18th edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships and Ireland have a chance to make even more history. Yesterday Michael Conlan won Ireland’s first ever gold medal at boxing’s toughest tournament, and today Joe Ward has the chance to make it two gold medals in 24 hours after a 41 year famine.
However, the Westmeath light heavy will have to pull off a shock when he takes on the AIBA World Boxer of the Year Julio Cesar De La Cruz of Cuba. The Caribbean boxer defeat Ward at the semi final stage of the last Word Championships (albeit in a close bout after Ward had just returned from a freak knee injury).
Ward may have to change his style for this bout against the slick counterpuncher, and aim to bully rather than box the two-time World Champion.
Ward is due in the ring at around 6:15pm Irish time
La Cruz is a 2/7 favourite going into the bout whilst Ward can be had at 9/4.
