World Am Championships Box Offs to take place August

Ireland is set for one of its biggest ever weekends of boxing as it has been confirmed to Mirror Sport that box offs for places on the Irish national team to compete in the 2011 World Amatuer boxing Championships in Azerbaijan will take place in the National Stadium between August 10-13.
With this years World championship offering direct route to London 2012 Irish fighters at every weight will literally be fighting for the Olympic dream next month.
It was unsure as to how the IABA were going to select the team for the the tournament, that offers Olympic places to all its semi finalist, but it seems the Irish governing body have elected to offer all elite boxers a chance to book their place on the plane Azerbaijan and possibly London 2012.
The majority of reigning Irish champions will be upset their status as the best in the country will not be enough to ensure they enter the crucial tournament.
However, the likes of European gold medallist Ray Moylette and Beijing silver medallist and amateur boxing legend Kenny Egan will get an Olympic second chance.
Egan’s rematch with the teenager, who prevented from winning an unrepentant 11 consecutive national titles, Joe Ward will be the most eagerly anticipated bouts in recent Irish amateur and pro history.
