Women’s World Champonships moved

By Bernard O’Neill (IABA Press Officer)

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) today confirmed that May 16th to May 28th are the new dates for the AIBA Women’s World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The tournament, which is an Olympic qualifier, was originally scheduled to be held in January in Kazakhstan.

However, it will now be the second last qualifying tournament for Rio 2016, and the last for female boxers.

Meanwhile, the final AOB European Olympic qualifiers for men and women goes ahead as scheduled in Istanbul, Turkey from April 20th to May 1st.

This means that if Ceire Smith, Katie Taylor, and Laoise Traynor reach the final in Istanbul they will achieve early qualification for Rio ahead of the Worlds in May.

Taylor will be aiming for her sixth consecutive World Championships medal in Astana
