Wilton Anger for Ashley
By Jonny Stapleton
A distraught Luke Wilton has expressed his anger at Ashley Sexton and labelled the Londoner unprofessional after he failed to make weight for their English title fight.
The Belfast fighter was set to challenge Sexton in what he believed would have been a massive break through fight on the undercard of Lee Purdy and Colin Lynes British welterweight title fight live on SKY tonight.
However, the fight was called off and replaced with a heavyweight bout between Cork based Cuban Mike Perez and Zack Page after Sexton had trouble with the scales.
Wilton, who hoped to use the fight to manoeuvre himself into British title contention, is naturally gutted but believes he is closing in on domestic honours.
Winky, who was born in East London, hopes he will get the chance to fight for the vacated English strap.
“I am gutted,” Wilton told www.irishboxing.com. I really fancied my chances against Sexton. I believe I would have picked up my first belt. I was angry as its very unprofessional. I didn’t have as much notice as him and I was two pound over weight three days before the fight, but this is boxing1!”
“I hope to get on one of Matchrooms shows before Christmas. I am knocking on the door for a British title fight. Maybe the board can make a fight for the vacant English belt between myself and somebody else.”
