Wayne McCullough prospect fights tonight on HBO

Tonight, live on HBO from Carson City, California, US hotshot Julian Ramirez [16(8)-0] takes on fellow unbeaten featherweight Arthur Lopez [20(15)-0-1].

The fight acts as chief support to the WBC super featherweight title clash between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido at the StubHub Centre, and Ramirez’s bout will be of interest to Irish fans.

This is because it will be the L.A. starlet’s first fight under the tutelage of Irish boxing legend Wayne McCullough.

The Golden Boy southpaw has joined up with the Olympic silver medalist and former WBC bantamweight champ as he seeks to move into title contention.

23 year old Ramirez, a gym mate of Jason Quigley and a former sparring partner of Scott Quigg, told the L.A. Times that “this [fight v Lopez] puts whoever wins up there for a world title.”

On his new protoge, ‘The Pocket Rocket’ McCullough commented that “I’ve liked him from when I first saw him.”

“He has stuff to learn, but we’ve taught him the method Eddie Futch taught me: defense, blocking, slipping. I’ve got him sitting down on his punches more.”
