Unbeaten French Champion next for Gary Cully

Gary Cully [14(8)-0] will face an undefeated French opposition on his debut as a Matchroom fighter.

‘The Diva’ will share the ring with former French Champion Jaouad Belmehdi [16(8)-0-2] on the undercard of Katie Taylor – Karen Elizabeth Carabajal at Wembley Arena on October 29.

Cully’s presence on the card was confirmed previously and the opponent was revealed today.

‘Le bombardier Marocain’ represents a solid first fight since signing a Matchroom deal but the ambitious Kildare fighter will remain confident of victory, particularly considering he stopped a former world champion in Miguel Vazquez last time out.

New promoter Eddie Hearn initially wanted to put the Nass southpaw in with big punching lightweight Angel Fierro [19(15)-1(0)-2] on a card that holds serious Irish interest.

However, that fight couldn’t be made and Cully now faces 24-year-old Belmehdi.

Speaking upon signing the 26-year-old Pete Taylor trained fighter, Hearn said the pathway to success has been opened for the fighter with star quality.

“The lightweight division is up there as the most exciting division in boxing and Gary has huge confidence in himself to make his own mark on it. With the backing of Matchroom Gary has all of the tools he needs to achieve his dreams.”

Belfast’s Caoimhin Agyarko also faces undefeated opposition on the card, American Peter Dobson.
