Reports today suggest that the Manchester-born former Irish heavyweight champion will tomorrow give up his titles as he undergoes treatment for depression.
Both the WBA and WBO have discussed stripping the big man after his out of the ring troubles and withdrawal from a refixed rematch with Wladimir Klitschko. However, the ‘Gypsy King’ looks set to beat the governing bodies to the punch.
The IBF had previously stripped Fury due to his contractual obligation to rematch Klitschko, thus preventing him from facing mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov.
Fury last week stated his intention the retire, but rescinded this claim less than three hours later.
While it seems unlikely, Fury could perhaps be labeled as ‘champion in recess’ and be first in line for a title challenge when he recovers.
