Tommy McCarthy secures comeback date on big bill

Eleven months on from his last outing, Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-1(0)] will finally return to the ring.

The Lenadoon cruiserweight has been tonight confirmed for the Matchroom Promotions bill at the SSE Odyssey Arena in Belfast on Saturday October 21st.

Headlined by Ryan Burnett’s IBF-WBA bantamweight unification against Zhanat Zhakiyanov, McCarthy will feature in a six-round undercard bout.

‘The Mac Attack’ has not fought since his British title final eliminator loss to Matty Askin in Manchester last November.

In the proceeding months he has been Tony Bellew’s chief sparring partner for the David Haye fight, seen Askin go on to claim the Lonsdale belt against Craig Kennedy, have a fight with Mike Perez fall through, and change management from Pat Magee to Mack The Knife Global.

Next month’s bout is intended to be rust-shaker of a bout for McCarthy following the long lay-off ahead of a hunt for an Askin rematch. The 26 year old has a British title eliminator pending with Irish champion Luke Watkins which is to take place by the end of the year.

It is a third appearance on a Matchroom bill for McCarthy. The Ulsterman fought at the 3Arena in Dublin in November 2014 on the Macklin-Heiland card and featured in a televised bout in Glasgow in May 2016 here he dominated Jon Lewis Dickinson on the Burns-Di Rocco undercard.

An opponent for McCarthy will be confirmed shortly.

The Ryan Burnett v Zhanat Zhakiyanov undercard also features Paul Hyland v Stephen Ormond, Tyrone McKenna v Tommy Coyle, James Tennyson v Darren Traynor, Feargal McCrory, Jay Byrne, and Josh Kelly, with more still to be announced.

Tickets for the night cost £30, £40, £60, £100, £150 (VIP), and are available from the boxers involved or through HERE
