Tommy McCarthy handed TV boost ahead of Askin final eliminator
A reshuffle to the Boxnation schedule has handed Belfast cruiserweight Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-0] a big boost.
The Mac-Attack is scheduled to face English champion Matty Askin [20(13)-3(1)-1] in a British title final eliminator on Saturday October 22nd at the Bolton Whites Hotel on a Steve Wood VIP show, and it was today confirmed that the fight will be shown live on Boxnation TV.
Boxnation initially intended to air a big show at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, headlined by Liam Williams defending his British light middleweight title against Ahmet Patterson, Tommy Langford defending his Commonwealth strap and contesting for the British middleweight title against Sam Sheedy, and Billy Joe Saunders defending his WBO World middleweight title against Artur Akavov. However, both Saunders and Williams have suffered minor injuries in training, forcing the postponement of the show to November 26th at the same venue.
Therefore, Boxnation have snapped up the show in Bolton as a replacement. In addition, Donegal-Swindon super middleweight Jamie Cox [20(12)-0], who was due to appear on the Cardiff show, has been added to the Bolton bill alongside Paul Butler.
It’s a second successive television date for McCarthy, who fought live on Sky Sports in his last bout against Jon Lewis-Dickinson.
In addition to this television news, the British title picture has become clearer for McCarthy with the BBBoC confirming today that Ovill McKenzie has vacated the Lonsdale belt. This means that the winner of McCarthy v Askin will face Craig Kennedy for the now-vacant British belt.
