Steven Donnelly “over the moon” with opening win
Steven Donnelly was a very happy man this afternoon.
The Ballymena welterweight kicked off Ireland’s Olympic boxing campaign with a win over Algeria’s Zohir Kedache in the Round of 32.
Immediately afterwards the All Saints fighter spoke to RTÉ and expressed his delight at the opening victory, noting how “it was a great win for me, it’s always good to get the first one out of the way.”
“I’m glad to get in and get three good rounds under my belt and come away with the win.”
“I’m over the moon with my opening performance.”
Describing his dominant win over the North African he admitted that “it was comfortable, he was a crafty southpaw, I just had to listen to my coaches in the corner and use my jab and feint.”
“There were times when I was falling in a wee bit but that will come with sharpness and more rounds.”
“I’ll get better with every fight.”
“This is only the start of the journey, so hopefully I can keep that going and do the country proud.”
