Stephen Ormond signs with American promoter

Stephen Ormond has taken the Spike route and signed a promotional contract with Murphy’s boxing.

Ormond’s has been fighting under the Frank Warren banner for the last number of years, but like gym mate Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan felt he was seen as an opponent for British based promotional mates.

The World title hopeful would have considered re signing with the British promoter if a World title fight was guaranteed, but has elected to work with Murphy’s boxing, who have good American links but remain open to him fighting in Ireland.

‘The Rock’ has seen first hand how the move has benefited Cork middleweight ‘Spike’ and will hope to follow suit. O’Sullivan has moved into World title contention and has got some fights on big American cards and the Clondalkin puncher will hope to follow suit.

Murphy’s boxing released the following statement today:

Boston, MA – Murphys Boxing is please to announce that we have signed a promotional contract with Lightweight Stephen “The Rock” Ormond. Stephen (18-2 9KO’s) who hails from Dublin, Ireland is the type of all action, come forward fighter that instantly makes fans of anyone watching him. Much like his training partner Spike O’Sullivan, Ormond is a relentless fighter who is use to being in tough fights. In his last fight Ormond, the former WBO European Lightweight Champion knocked out Jacek Wylezol in the 2nd round of their July bout at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

In February of this year, Ormond faced off against WBO World Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan. In a close, hotly contested fight that many observers had Ormond winning going into the 10th round, he was disqualified by the referee for persistent use of his head. Many at ringside were shocked at the DQ, especially with the excessive holding by Flanagan. Instead of letting the disqualification, which robbed him of his biggest win to date, get him down, Ormond had it serve as additional motivation, and for everyone in the boxing community, showed that the seven year professional, is a fighter to watch, one that most deservedly belongs in the ring with the top fighters of the Lightweight division. With this signing, Murphys Boxing looks to help propel Ormond to a Lightweight Championship of the world.

MURPHYS BOXING WILL HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT SHORTLY ABOUT STEVE ORMOND’S NEXT FIGHT, AS WELL AS OUR NEXT FIGHT CARD. PLEASE VISIT US AT MURPHYSBOXING.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.
