O’Callaghan makes it three Irish finalists

Shauna O’Callaghan joined Amy Broadhurst and Orla Garvey in the finals of the European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships in Keszthely, Hungary yesterday.

But Saoirse Dignam, AIBA World Junior bronze medallist Kelsey Leonard, Chloe Callender and Lauren Kelly had to settle for bronze.

O’Callaghan stopped Olexandra Kharytonuk of the Ukraine in the third round to book her spot into the lightweight Junior final and guarantee at least a third silver medal for Ireland.

“An excellent performance from Shauna today and we now have three in the finals tomorrow,” said Irish coach Liam Brereton.

But Leonard, Callander and Kelly bowed out despite top class performances against two Hungarian opponents and the Ukraine.

Brereton, referring specifically to the judging, described these results as “dismaying”.

Dignam was the final Irish boxer in action today, but the Irish welter, who will be bringing home bronze, was beaten by Poland’s Sonia Sabiniarz.

Broadhurst is between the ropes in the Youth featherweight final tomorrow afternoon and Garvey and O’Callaghan are in action in the Junior featherweight and lightweight finals.

Saturday’s start times have yet to be confirmed.

Ireland will be taking home at least three silver and six bronze medals from Hungary.

Team Ireland are schedule to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 7.15pm on Sunday evening, August 23rd – Ryanair FR1024 23AUG Budapest Dublin 1705 1915

Those attending Sunday’s homecoming will recall that Irish women’s boxing is proudly sponsored by Quick Park of Dublin Airport.
