Star-studded line-up anounced for Celtic Box Cup

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Some of Ireland’s top Elite boxers have their names in the hat for the 2015 Celtic Boxing Cup which begins in Dungarvan, Waterford on Friday.

Current Irish Elite champions Myles Casey, Dervla Duffy, Kelly Harrington, Clare Grace and Dean Gardiner have entered for the three-day event.

Five-time Irish Elite champion Eric Donovan, a European Elite medalist, will also compete on Suirside, along with 2015 Elite finalists Joanne Lambe and Kenneth Ogungbowa, the 2014 Elite champion, Matthew Tinker, and AIBA World Youth silver medalist Christina Desmond.

Desmond and Grace, a European Elite bronze medalist who is ranked No. 8 in the world by AIBA, could renew acquaintances in the middleweight final. Both women clashed last January in the Elite welterweight decider at the National Stadium in Dublin, with Grace edging a split decision.

The duo have since moved up to the middleweight class – which is an Olympic weight for women.

The 2015 Celtic Box Cup, which was founded by Gerry O’Mahony, continues to expand internationally with teams from Europe, Australia and the Middle East entered for the third edition of tournament.

The event will run for three days this weekend.
