Sick Aoife O’Rourke forced to settle for silver at European U22s | FULL RESULTS

The nine-fighter Irish team will return home to Dublin from the European Under-22 Championships with one silver and one gold medal to show for their week’s work in Romania.

Earlier today Dealgan lightweight Amy Broadhurst had secured gold with a win over Francesca Martusciello but Roscommon middleweight Aoife O’Rourke was unable to attempt to join her after she was withdrawn from her 75kg final.

The Castlerea puncher was due to face top Turkish fighter Busenaz Surmeneli in the final but had to cede a walkover to the double underage World and triple European champion.

An unfortunate illness meant O’Rourke had to pull out but the reigning Elite Senior light heavyweight champion will return from her first big international meet with a silver.
