Phelan: draw is just a bump in the road to the top

JUST a bump on the road to bigger things. That’s how Allan Phelan describes his draw in Queens over the weekend.

The Newbridge native couldn’t build on his six fight winning streak drawing with Angel Albelo moving his record to 6-2-1 in America.

Phelan was shocked with the scoring -one judge scored the fight 58-56 in Phelan’s favour, one had it a draw at 57-57 whilst a third had it 59-55 for Albelo- and is adamant he won the clash.

However, isn’t too down about the result and the fighter who lost his first two fights stresses his career resurgence isn’t over.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com about the fight and the result Phelan said:

“It was a very awkward fight. We knew nothing about the guy and he just kept running. Once I caught him with a few heavy shots all he wanted to do was hold or run.

“I won the fight. I don’t know where the judges got some of the scoring.  It’s very frustrating knowing I won and only got the draw, but that’s boxing.

“I am going to take a break now and carry on with everything after Christmas. The plan is to stay fighting and keep moving up the ranking. This result is only a small bump in the road with. It’s nothing major I just have to stay focused and keep training,” Phelan added before revealing he wants a homecoming clash.

“I want to try and get fights in Ireland next year too.”
