Pacquaio to run rule over Irish amateurs in Doha

Eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquaio will get the opportunity to see some of Ireland’s finest in action at the AIBA World Elite Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Doha, Qatar.

The Filipino legend arrived in the Persian Gulf state today as a special guest of Qatar Boxing Federation President Yousuf Ali Al Kazim the International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Dr CK Wu.

Pacquaio, who switched codes when he was just 16, will attend today’s bouts at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena.

The “People’s Champion” said he was honoured to be a guest of the QBF and AIBA at such a prestigious tournament and that he wanted to see Olympic style boxing.

Irish captain Michael Conlan, Brendan Irvine and Michael O’Reilly will be in last 16 action today.

Joe Ward and Sean McComb are between the ropes tomorrow.
