Medal winner McComb: team Ireland is as good as any team in Europe

THE small island of Ireland is a match for any European country when it comes to boxing claims Sean McComb.

McComb followed Brendan Irvine into the European Championship semi finals and secured at bronze medal at the very least with victory over Yasmin Yilmaz of Turkey in Baku on Tuesday and instantly declared the Irish team is ‘one of the best in the competition’.

The Belfast lightweight also believes he is the fittest fighter in the competition and is focusing on his performance and not the talents of top seed Albert Selimov of Azerbaijan, who he faces in Thursdays semi final.

“It comes from how much training we do,” McComb told reporters. “It’s down to everything. My fitness gives me confidence, I know I’m fitter than anyone out there. We’re one of the best teams here, no doubt about it. For a small island we’re doing something here.

“It doesn’t matter who you’re fighting, it’s up to the five judges around the ring. It doesn’t matter who he is, even he was 7′ tall. I’m just here to worry about my own performance.”
