MEDAL ALERT: European Schoolboys Championships Day 5 Results

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Ireland will be taking home five bronze medals – at least – from the European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa, Russia.

Brandon McCarthy and Fergus Quinn joined Stephen Cairns, Ethan McGuckin and Michael McDonald in Saturday’s semi-finals after posting impressive last-eight wins today.

Quinn, displaying a fine array of counter-punching skills, beat Hungary’s Gyula Varga on a majority decision to join his Cookstown BC team-mate Ethan McGuckin in the business end of the 24-nation tournament.

McCarthy followed that up with a first round TKO of Akram Ghazi in the 43kg class. Ghazi took a count off a flashing left in the opening minute and the ref called a half after the talented Israeli athlete took another count moments later.

Earlier today, Killian Geraghty was beaten by England’s Denis McCann in the 41kg class. Both boxers had their moments in a fiery 41kg class, with Geraghty impressing in the second. However, the judges leaned in favour of McCann after close 1st and 3rd frames.

Jake Tucker lost to Bohdan Sereda of the Ukraine. Tucker took a count in the second. The Irish bantam countered Sereda’s aggression well in the first, but was caught on the ropes in the middle stanza. Tucker had a good third round and found the target with the majority of the cleaner shots, but it wasn’t enough to see him into the last-four.

Friday is a rest day at the tournament. The semi-finals and finals will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home from Russia via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1) at 9.15pm on Monday evening, November 9th. Flight AF1016 from Charles De Gaulle Airport.
