Magee: Tommy McCarthy closing in on British title

Belfast cruiserweight Tommy McCarthy had a career best performance at the weekend when he headlined the Féile Fight Night in the Falls Park. Big Tommy knocked down the experienced and game Courtney Fry twice en-route to an eight round points win.

Speaking to Nicky Fullerton of the Belfast Newsletter, McCarthy’s manager, Pat Magee, gave his thoughts on his young fighter’s break-out win.

Magee was “very pleased with his performance. That was a big step-up at this stage of his career and he handled it very well.”

The veteran manager also believes that the win can have repercussions in terms of titles with the Belfast man explaining that “Fry was an experienced campaigner and beating him has got us in the British title mix.”

“Tommy is improving all the time and we will sit down this week and decide what to do next.”

Magee finally revealed that “I think we are two to three fights away from a British title shot.”
