Luke Wilton not taking comeback foe for granted
Luke Wilton [17(7)-5(1)-1] is looking to begin a career rebirth just days after the birth of his third daughter.
Baby Eva fittingly arrived on fight week and a family steeped in boxing is looking to celebrate the new arrival with a Wilton win this coming Saturday night at the Shorts Sports and Social Club in Belfast.
The Eastside flyweight returns after over a year and a half out, a period in which he considered retirement, against Bulgarian dangerman Georgi Georgiev over six rounds on the ‘Back In Belfast’ card and is eager to being a journey that he believes can bring him back to domestic title fights.
The former British and Commonwealth title challenger admits there is some rebuilding to be done in terms of climbing the rankings and getting his name back out there but is excited to be making a return nonetheless.
“I feel good and ready to fight now,” he told Irish-Boxing.com before stating the birth of his child has given him a little boost and outlining what he wants to get out of his return fight.
“It always gives you a bit of motivation with the extra baby. I want to get some rounds in and get rid of the rust but I have been sparring well so should be fine.”
“Also it just gets my name back among those at the weight and back in the mix for titles. I know I need a couple of fights first. ”
Wilton would be expected to defeat his Bulgarian opponent regardless of the time out, but claims he won’t overlook the challenge that lies ahead. Georgiev has caused upsets before and ‘Winky’ has stressed that the win is more important than how it’s achieved.
“I am not taking anything for granted. I just want to win.”
“I don’t like to disrespect anybody or take anything for granted. Whatever way it comes, just a win on Saturday night will help me top off this amazing week with my third daughter Eva being born.”
Wilton, who expects to weigh-in around bantamweight against a physically-larger opponent before moving down the scales as he closes in on big fights, hasn’t fought in Belfast since March of 2017 but expects his loyal following to turn up at the Shorts Sports and Social Club this Saturday.
“It’s been good, there’s been people that have followed me from the first fight which is brilliant and appreciate it,” added the 30-year-old bill-topper.
