Liam Gaynor Passes Tough Test to Gain Domestic Title Momentum

There was a brilliant Irish win away from the spotlight on Saturday night.

Liam Gaynor wasn’t fighting at the Motor Point Arena in Nottingham but did have his hand raised nonetheless.

The Tallaght lightweight out-pointed Johnny Phillips at the Bolton Whites Hotel in the north of England.

As expected Phillips asked questions of the ‘Kilnamangh Kid’ but ultimately Gaynor had the answer and came away with a points win.

Phillips had come into the fight after a spell of fights with some of the division’s more known names, he had eight weeks to prepare and would have seen Gaynor as a potential scalp.

The English fighter certainly came to win and gave it a real go, pushing Gaynor on occasion – but the Irish fighter had enough about him to secure a 58-57 victory.

The 24-year-old will now look to try and secure a domestic fight and is keen to fight for the BUI Celtic title.

The win means Gaynor’s record now reads 8-1, Phillips slips to 5-8 with the defeat.
