Joe Rea’s wait for a victory finally came to end in the North Sydney Rugby League club on Saturday.

The 33 year old super middleweight went into the fight boasting the second longest winless streak in Irish boxing – Bangor-Ugandan Moses Matovu has the longest – but managed to get his first win since he upset Dwane Mulavi back in 2013.

Rea ended a run of 19 defeats with victory over Yong Zang (5-5-1), who went into the fight on the back of three wins.

Sucrai Rea won a 39-37, 39-37, 37-39 split decision to register his eleventh victory in his 45 fight.

The Ballymena former Prizefighter contestant was brought in as an opponent after turning into a competitive journeyman since moving Down Under. Having felt hard done by in a good number of his Australian hosted fights – five draws and some close points reverses suggest his record should have more green Ws on it – Rea must have feared the worst when he heard split decision.

However, he was awarded the victory and prevented his winless streak stretching to 20.
