Kid Shamrock JJ Metcalf [14(6)-0] did not disappoint in his headline bout on the inaugural MGM Liverpool show at the weekend.

The Liverpool light middleweight outpointed (78:75) Cameroonian Serge Ambomo over eight rounds, knocking the African down in the third en-route to a step-up win on the ‘Genesis’ show.

The lead-up to the fight proved to be disruptive for Metcalf who saw original opponent Bradley Pryce withdraw, and he revealed afterwards that he carried an injury through much of training.

“I had a bit of a foot injury so I weren’t doing as much running,” Metcalf told IFL TV afterwards. “I did a bit of swimming but I don’t know if it affected me or not. It was a little thing in my mind, without the running it just plays on your mind, but it probably didn’t effect me much.”

On the fight itself, the 28 year old was pleased with the hard-fought win and described how “it was good. I boxed alright. He was a tough opponent, unbeaten.”

“He had pedigree and he looked like Mr. T. He’s been in the Olympics so I knew he was going to be tough.”

“I think I boxed well, obviously there were little mistakes I can go and work on and fix, but I think I boxed well.”
