Delfine Persoon has decided to target Tokyo and not Taylor because a rematch is not forthcoming according to her coach.

The Belgian, who gave Katie Taylor her toughest fight to date, will turn amateur officially on January 1 as she bids to secure Olympic 2020 glory.

The news puts in doubt the idea of a mega summer rematch as if the former WBC lightweight world champion qualifies fro the Games she will have medal rather than title aspirations.

Team Taylor have predicted a massive 2020 and plans to fight Amanda Serrano, Persoon and Cecilia Brækhus have been mentioned. Seven weight world champ Serrano for March, the undisputed rematch with Persoon in the Summer and fellow undiputed champ Brækhus before the year is out.

With Persoon’s Olympic ambitions plans to fight the Police Officer could be pushed back, but her coach Filiep Tampere can’t see the fight happening.

Indeed, he claims he won’t happen now and he puts the blame on Eddie Hearn and co.

“[The Rematch] will never happen,” says Tampere. “A lot has been said about that, but there is really nothing concrete done about it. Her manager stops everything, he will know why [it won’t happen].

“So we are going full steam ahead with participating in the Olympic Games. She has nothing to prove in the professional circuit. Delfine became world champion in all federations and wrongly lost against Taylor. She must now take the chance to box at the Olympic Games, otherwise it would be too late considering her age. ”

There is a school of thought that has Persoon’s manager playing a smart game and attempting to put pressure on Matchroom to put a sizable offer on the table.
