Ireland secure DOUBLE SILVER at European Junior Championships

Irish boxers claimed two silvers on the opening day of semi-final action at the European Junior Championships in Romania.

Six of Ireland’s young female talent were fighting for silver in the prestigious tournament and two progressed to their respective finals whilst four had to settle for bronze medals.

Winnie McDonagh and Chloe Gabriel were the two progress and will fight for gold on the same day as Katie Taylor plans to become undisputed world lightweight champion in the pro ranks [Saturday].

Robyn Kelly, Aaliyah Butler, Tiegan Farrell and Dearbhla Tinnelly all excited the competition – all four losing to Russian opposition – but will return home with bronze medals.

The two that did progress to deciders did so in emphatic one sided fashion.

McDonagh put the pressure on and kept it on against Germany’s Ani Manukyan to upgrade her guaranteed bronze to at least silver.

The Dubliner found the target with big shots throughout her semi-final with Manukyan receiving a public warning for holding in the third.

McDonagh now goes for a second gold at European level having topped the Schoolgirls podium last year.

Italy’s Elen Ayari, who took two standing counts in rounds two and three, was unable to handle the accuracy and frequency of Gabriel’s left jab, but it was the Irish champion’s right that sealed the win after the Galway titlist rocked her opponent with a massive shot in the third.

Meanwhile, the Boys in Green will be boxing for places in the finals tomorrow with three between the ropes in Galati. Marty McDonagh, Mickes Donoghue, and Taylor Guiney are the trio looking to upgrade.

As things stand, Ireland are guaranteed at least two silver and seven bronze.
