Ireland jump from 7th position to 3rd spot in the medals table in sensational conclusion to boxing at the European Games.
Katie Taylor and Micheal O’Reilly claimed gold in Baku on the final day, two results which proved the catalyst behind the jump.
The victories increased Ireland’s medal haul to two gold (Taylor and O’Reilly), one silver (Brendan Irvine) and a bronze (Sean McComb).
Every single fighter that competed in the first Irish ever European Championships either won a medal, lost in a medal bout (quarter final), or lost to an eventual medalist.
Even more impressively circumstances meant Ireland couldn’t send two Olympic medal winners Paddy Barnes or Michael Conlan or Joe Ward, who would have been a medal hope.
