‘The American Idol’ defeated Belfast’s James Tennyson on Saturday night to retain his IBF super featherweight world title and last night claimed he wanted to make it consecutive Irish scalps.
The champion took to Twitter to call out Carroll, stating he was willing to defend against the popular Dub before the year was out.
‘King Kong’ is due to face Frenchman Guillaume Frenois in a final eliminator this December but Farmer ‘offered’ him the chance to go straight into a title fight.
“Since Jono Carroll want this work so bad, how about this? You don’t have to fight for an eliminator in December. I’ll fight you next in December,” tweeted the Philly title holder.
The tweet started an interesting back and forth between the Matchroom super feathers with Farmer continually suggesting a December fight and Carroll only too keen to oblige.
As noted previously, the only roadblock to a Farmer-Carroll fight is Frenois [46(12)-1(0)] and, unfortunately for Carroll and Irish fans, the Frenchman does not want to let his own opportunity pass.
Ranked above Carroll in the IBF ladder, Frenois is keen face Carroll in their already-agreed December final eliminator and the former European champion’s manager insists that the Dubliner will not be allowed skip the queue.
The French promoter and manager insisted that the IBF-ordered final eliminator will go ahead, reiterating that the fight has already been agreed for December and nothing will change.
“I can confirm that it’s impossible,” Lafifi told Irish-Boxing.com when asked about Farmer’s comments last night.
There were some suggestions that Frenois could be offered stand aside money and could be guaranteed a shot at the winner in the new year but Lafifi seems to suggest that isn’t a runner.
“The IBF will never allow this. We reached an agreement for eliminator in December between Frenois and Caroll. We have to sign an agreement, we agreed a deal this week
“So, the Farmer quote is bullshit,” he continued.
