‘I’m Still Waiting’ – Thomas Carty Hits Back at ‘lost his bottle’ claims after Croke Park
Thomas Carty has hit back at suggestions that he “lost his bottle” during his Croke Park clash with Dave Allen.
The Dubliner’s heavyweight showdown with the Brit at GAA Headquarters ended in bizarre fashion, with the popular local falling through the ropes and onto the floor after a punch to the back of the head.
The incident brought a dramatic but unsatisfactory conclusion to a possible breakthrough fight for the Celtic Warrior Gym boxer.
It also prompted online criticism from some quarters, with some suggesting the BUI Celtic Champion dove through the ropes in a bid to get Allen disqualified and others going as far as claiming he was looking for a way out.
Team Carty hit back at the claims on Monday afternoon with the fighter himself expressing shock that his characther was being questioned.
“I’ve just watched the fight back for the first time in full since Saturday night and I’m still waiting,” Carty said in a post online.
“I’m still waiting for the part where I lost my bottle and decided to jump headfirst out of the ring. I watched it back and all the fight consisted of was me punching Dave Allen in the face.
“I got two punches landed on me. The first one was in the back of the head – unintentional foul, whatever you want to say.
“And from that punch I then landed another six punches.
“I landed a one-two, one-two again, two uppercuts afterwards, nice combination, ended up in a clinch and then I got punched in the back of the head again.”
It was that second blow which Carty says caused him to lose his balance and fall through the ropes.
Rather than viewing the incident as an act of surrender, the Dubliner insists the sequence of punches immediately before it demonstrates that he was firmly engaged in the contest.
“That was an unintentional foul and that’s what led to me being upside down falling out of the ring,” he added. “Can somebody please point me in the direction of the part where I lost my bottle and decided this was enough?
“Because as far as I could see it was just me punching him in the face and I got two in the back of the head.”
Speaking on Off the Ball earlier on Monday, the popular puncher shared the heartache that came with seeing his oppurtuinty to claim a huge win on a huge card disappear.
Although he won’t see it now, but it noise around the fight could open the door to a lucrative rematch and it certainly adds narrative to the forever rumoured Johnny Fisher fight.
