Hurley crowned Best Technical Boxer at European Jnrs

Lorcan Hurley scooped the Best Technical Boxer Award at the European Junior Championships in Lviv.

The Tramore BC ace, a multiple Irish champion, was on the receiving end of a highly controversial “defeat” to Javid Huseynov in Friday’s semi-finals.

The talented Azeri light-fly was awarded a unanimous decision. However, Hurley, who clearly won the fight, received a standing ovation leaving the ring from Irish and neutral fans.

Irish team manager Stephen Connelly said that Hurley, who aged 14 is the youngest member of the 13-strong Irish squad in Lviv, was a credit to Irish boxing.

“Lorcan has had a fantastic tournament this week and he represented his country with pride inside and outside the ring, he said.

“We absolutely delighted that he has received this award and the totally deserves it and he has been outstanding in this weight class all week.”

Jason Harty (gold), Jim O’Reilly (silver), Lorcan Hurley (bronze) and Anthony Johnston (bronze) finished in podium positions for Ireland in Lviv.
