Home and Away – Kieran Molloy moving towards major fight
Kieran Molloy [2(2)-0] expects Galway to show its away day capabilities in Germany this weekend before a homecoming of note early next year.
The Oughterard BC graduate fights for the third time as a pro on the undercard of Padraig McCrory’s massive IBO light heavyweight world title fight in Frankfurt this weekend.
The amount of ‘Hammer’ fans making the trip has been a happy topic of discussion throughout the build-up, with some even predicting McCrory’s following will be more prominent than that of his opponent, Leon Bunn, who fights in his hometown.
However, a large cohort from Galway are also making the trip and – like they did on the Return of the Mick card – exciting prospect Molloy expects them to make their presence felt.
“It’s great to have Kurt [Walker] and Poddy fighting in the same card as well. The Irish support over there will be great. I’ve also got a big crowd from Galway making the trip over too,” Molloy tells Irish-boxing.com.
The trip to support their man could have been a lot shorter if, as first planned, Molloy fought in his home county this month.
Conlan Boxing first planned to promote the EU Championship bronze medal winner in Galway before the German offer came in for McCrory.
Molloy assures Galway is still on the card and he reveals he should bring boxing back to the locality for the first time in over a decade early next year.
“Galway was very close to happening but it’s rescheduled for early next year so we will look forward to that.”
The Top Rank fighter, who should also fight in Belfast on December 10th, fights Sandro Jajanidze [10(8)-26(4)-2] live on TG4 in Frankfurt this weekend.
The 23-year-old would be expected to defeat the Georgian but Jajanidze has proved himself durable and has recorded upsets in the past.
“My opponent is a durable Georgian who is solid so I have to be smart and stay switched on for him,” comments the Angel Fernandez trained light middleweight before revealing he has prepared well for his latest pro bout.
“I’ve put in a tough training camp, I’ve been improving in the gym and I’m looking for another good performance and a win.”
“I’m looking forward to just getting back in the ring now.”
Backing main eventer McCrory, he adds: “Hopefully, Pody gets the win and brings the belt back home to Ireland, I think he can do it.”
