European Youth Championships – Day 3 Results

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Irish captain Frankie Cleary bowed out of the European Youth Championships in Kolobrzeg, Poland today.

The Olympic BC bantam was beaten on a split decision by Hungary’s Sandor Tar.

Cleary won the first round this afternoon and was boxing well and at a higher pace in the second, but went down under a big right and took a second standing count after a big exchange near the end of the frame heading into a close third round, a harsh call as Cleary had caught his opponent with a big shot in the same exchange.

Earlier today, Michael Nevin booked his ticket into the last 16.

The former European Schoolboy and Junior champion, who is aiming for a unique hat-trick at the 38-nation tournament, TKO’d Heorhi Varashylau in the third round after dominating the first two frames against the Belarusian.

Nevin was 20-16,20-16,20-17 ahead when the ref intervened.

Irish coach John Conlan praised the performances of both boxers today. Nevin, Adam Kelly and James McGivern will be in action tomorrow.
