Ireland were handed a tough opening round draw today on Day 1 of the European Women’s Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The seven-woman team will have to take out a few big names if they are to bring home medals back to Ireland.

Light flyweight Lauren Hogan starts off against Russian Ekaterina Pinigina.

At bantamweight, Dervla Duffy will face Lacramioara Perijoc of Romania, who is stepping up from flyweight for this tournament.

Featherweight Moira McElliggot fights Croat Sara Beran in her first fight.

Tipperary lightweight Shauna O’Keefe will begin her campaign against Poland’s Aneta Rygielska

Dublin’s World Championships silver medlist Kelly Harrington will first face Russian Aleksandra Ordinav or Lina Skoghgen of Sweden in the 64kg class.

Offaly welter Gráinne Walsh will begin her campaign against Serbian Marija Petkovic

Cork middleweight Christina Desmond has received a bye and will fight for a medal in her first contest – but will have to get past Russian Oksana Trofimova
