Eddie Hearn: Macklin v Murray is still a big fight
IT didn’t quite generate the same hype as a potential Andy Lee versus Matthew Macklin middleweight clash, but ‘Mack The Knife’ versus Martin Murray was always one that whet the pallet nonetheless.
The pair have exchanged verbal blows over the years, but never graduated to swapping blows of a more volatile nature.
Both expressed a desire to fight, but the clash never materalised as both the Irish and St Helen’s punchers challenged for World titles. However now the three time World title challengers are both signed to Matchroom the bout looks easy to make.
Wheter it is a bout both want a present remains to be seen as Macklin has stated a fourth World title tilt is his sole focus, while Murray is eyeing up super middleweight honours.
However, promoter Eddie Hearn believes the clash would prove a massive draw and claims it is one he would considering making.
“That is definitely a fight that can work, maybe even at a catch weight,” the Matchroom boss told IFL TV.
“I know catch weights are not the most popular thing at the moment, but it can be done. Murray Macklin is still a big fight and that is a fight that could be made at middleweight or catch weight. Super middle might be too big for Macklin at the moment, but people want to see it and it’s still a great fight.”
