Irelands medal hopes at the 37th European Senior Championships in Liverpool received a major boost with Ross Hickey and Ryan Lindberg now just one win away from a medal.

The duo picked up wins to secure quarter-final spots and a chance to claim guaranteed bronze.

Belfast bantam Lindberg, must overcome the challenge of Germany’s Denis Makarov on Tuesday if he is to progress. This after the Immaculata star defeated Azerbaijans Samir Mammadov. Wicklowman Hickey, for his part, will face Famil Suleymanov of Azerbaijan after progressing to the last eight with a victory over Oleksandr Kluchko in the lightweight division.

It wasnt all good news as Dublins Conor Ahern and Donegals Willie McLoughlin were knocked out of the competition in their respective bouts.
