Dominant Amy Broadhurst begins defence of European U22 Gold medal

Amy Broadhurst got Ireland off the mark at the European Under-22 Championships in Russia and started the defence of her own lightweight title with a comfortable win in Vladikavkaz.

The Dealgan southpaw defeated Turk En Gizem in her opening bout, winning on a unanimous decision.

Following a somewhat competitive opening round, Broadhurst would dominate the second and third to take the win.

Broadhurst will now face Hungarian Kinga Mezovari in the quarter-finals on Tuesday with a guaranteed bronze medal on the line but the Louth talent will be looking to go far further than this.

There was less joy for Armagh light welter Shauna O’Callaghan who was stopped in the second round of her clash with Dutch puncher Chelsey Heijen.

Three Irish boxers are in action tomorrow in the Round of 32 – male captain Gabriel Dossen, David Oliver Joyce and Paddy Donovan – while Pierce O’Leary and Mary Geraghty box Sunday.
