‘Dom the Bomb’ ready to prove he is about more than explosive power

His power was the talking point after he hurt and dropped notoriously tough journeyman Liam Griffiths on his debut, but Dominic Donegan [1-0] is planning to show he packs more than just a punch in Cork on Saturday.

Putting down survival specialist Griffiths, who has only been stopped three times in 82 defeats, raised eyebrows and now the Cavan light middleweight is keen to show he can control a fight.

Not that he wasn’t in charge on his paid bow and Adrian Aleksiev [0-2(1)-1] maybe easier to hurt than his first opponent, but the Boxing Ireland fighter is keen to show his ring generalship on the ‘Leeside Revolution’ card.

“I am going to go out and show people how I can control the fight from start to finish. If my coach Jonathan Lewins sees weak spots he will inform me during rounds,” Donegan told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I am facing Adrian Alexsiev from Bulgaria. I seen a short clip of him on YouTube, there is not to much up. He is early on in his career so he is not just coming over for a pay cheque.”

‘Dom the Bomb’ is a surprise addition to the card. He was initially set to fight on the ‘Irish Invasion’ York Hall show in late June only to see his fight fall through last minute.

However, within hours of him arriving home from London Boxing Ireland had secured him a slot on the first show to visit Cork in a decade.

“What happened in London was completely out of my control and my manager’s control. We were over there to fight but found out that morning when I was in London my opponent was not fit to fight because of family reasons,” he recalls.

“At the end of the day that’s boxing you have to take the good with the bad. I was delighted Stephen [Sharpe] rang me when I was only home from London saying he had me on this Cork show. I was over the moon and was straight back into training. There was is messing around with the Boxing Ireland team.”

One of his Boxing Ireland team mates is in action on the same card against his fellow county man tomorrow night.

Donegan, who should in theory benefit from the extra Cavan support, wished both Eddie Treacy and Owen Duffy good luck ahead of their intriguing battle.

“There will be great Cavan surport there it will drive the two of us on. We are both going to be flying the Cavan flag. I want to wish Eddie and Owen all the best in there big fight tomorrow night.”
