1986: Barry McGuigan lost his WBA featherweight World title on a scorcher of an afternoon against the unheralded Steve Cruz in Las Vegas. Severely dehydrated, The Clones Cyclone faded towards the end and conceded two fifteenth round knockdowns which would prove crucial in the final scoring where he lost a close decision.

2007: Bernard Dunne claimed a competitive win over tough Norweigan Reidar Walstad to defend his European super bantamweight title for a second time at the Point Depot in Dublin.

2007: Ireland claimed five medals on the final day of the EU Championships held in Dublin. Roy Sheehan, Kenny Egan, and Darren Sutherland grabbed gold with wins over Xavier Noel (France), Constantin Bejenaru (Romania), and James Degale (Britain) respectively. Belfast’s Carl Frampton and Cathal McMonagle would settle for silver following losses to Khedafi Djelkhir and Roberto Cammarelle.

1923: Belfast’s Dave Magill won the vacant Irish heavyweight title through a fifteenth round disqualification win over Connaught’s Bartley Madden at Celtic Park.

1987: Belfast’s Terry Magee, elder brother of Eamonn and Noel, knocked Seamus Casey out in the sixth round to claim the inaugural Irish light middleweight title.

1949: Bert Hyland won a ten round points decision over Jimmy Ingle in a Dublin derby at Dalymount Park for the Irisj middleweight title.

2015: Belfast lightweight Sean McComb guaranteed himself a bronze medal at the European Games with a win over Turk Yasin Yilmaz. McComb would lose a close contest with Azeri star ALbert Selimov in the semi-final in Baku.
