Conlan joins Barnes on plane to Rio 2016
Michael Conlan capped off a perfect night for Irish boxing with a unanimous victory over Jose Diaz-Azocar in Venezuela on Sunday morning which ensures his place at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Conlan joined teammate Paddy Barnes on the plane to Rio after his victory and Azerbaijan’s Magomed Gurbanov’s loss to Mora Garcia of Puerto Rico ensured his ticket.
The Italia Thunder fighter looked classy throughout the bout, switching from orthodox to southpaw at will and continuously landing clean on his Venezuelan opponent.
All three judges all gave the decision to the Belfast boxer by 49-46.
