Ciara Ginty – “You always want to get revenge when you lose”

Youth Olympic silver medalist Ciara Ginty made her way to a first Senior Elite final at the weekend and exacted some revenge while she was at it.

The Geesala light welter defeated Athlone’s Cheyanne O’Neill in their semi final on Saturday night at the National Stadium.

The fight was a repeat of the final of the National U-22 Championships last month where O’Neill defeated Ginty. This time round however, the Mayo teen was able to more successfully implement her reach advantage and claim at 4-1 split decision win

Speaking to Irish-Boxing.com after the fight, Ginty noted how “I was more comfortable going into it this time, I was more ready than three weeks ago. I thought I’d be a bit more nervous, but I was more ready.”

“I felt good during the fight too.”

While a place in Friday’s final was the main, indeed only, goal, Ginty admitted that “I kind of wanted to get that one back, you always want to get revenge when you lose.”

Next up is the decider with Dealgan’s Emma Agnew, an unfamiliar foe, with Ginty describing how “I’ve heard of her before but I’ve never met her, so it’ll be new for me. It’s my first time entering the Elites, I took last year off for my Leaving Cert, it’s all new.”
