Carl Frampton criticises Leo Santa Cruz over unwanted Abner Mares rematch
There is only one rematch the people want to see Leo Santa Cruz in according to Carl Frampton.
The WBA featherweight champion has had a June 9th return with Abner Mares confirmed and has promised an all-action repeat of their 2015 clash.
‘El Terremoto’ claimed a majority decision in that entertaining first instalment, however most felt that – after some competitive opening rounds – that the rangier Santa Cruz had somewhat worked Mares out and was well worth the win.
The all-Mexican element and exciting nature of the first bout meant a repeat was always going to happen and Santa Cruz has always responded positively when rematch questions were put his way, perhaps even more so than to talk of a rubber match with Frampton.
‘The Jackal’ believes a third, deciding, fight between them, however, is what the fans would prefer to see. The only man to beat Leo Santa Cruz took to Twitter to suggest Frampton-Santa Cruz a more appealing prospect.
Leo, good luck to you and Abner but the dogs on the street know that’s not the rematch the fans want to see https://t.co/BgpgK3MRM9

After Frampton dethroned Santa Cruz to become a two-weight World champion in July of 2016, who then got revenge in early 2017 – an immediate rematch was mooted.
However, the LA-based puncher reneged on a promise to come to Belfast and a turbulent year for ‘The Jackal’ meant a third instalment never looked likely.
With the Belfast fighter now facing Nonito Donaire on April 21st and planning a Windsor Park fight in August, Santa Cruz doesn’t seem to be on the immediate radar – especially considering his unwillingness to travel to Belfast.
However, Frampton is still keen and it could be an option for later in the year should he come through his next two bouts.
