Brandon McCarthy has been named Irish captain for the European Junior Championships in Albena, Bulgaria.

Irish coach Billy McClean confirmed this morning that the St Michael’s Athy BC bantamweight will skipper the Irish side and Jake Tucker of the Holy Trinity BC in Belfast is Irish vice captain.

McCarthy featured in last year’s edition of the championships. The Kildare fighter has also claimed European Schoolboys silver in the past.

The squad finished up their training camp in Edenderry, Offaly yesterday ahead of the 21st edition of the European Juniors.

The team, who fly out to Albena on Saturday afternoon, are ready to roll, according to McClean.

“It will be a tough tournament given the amount of nations that have entered, as per usual, he said.

“The team are in tip top shape from the training camp and eagerly looking forward to that start of the competition. They’re ready to roll.”

The Irish unit are all current Senior Cadet champions. Boxing begins on Monday in Albena.
