The boxing world’s disgusted reaction to Paul Hyland’s win over Stephen Ormond

Stephen Ormond and Paul Hyland Jr went to war last night in Belfast – but the brilliant fight was overshadowed by a controversial and questionable decision.

Hyland took the fight on a split decision after twelve entertaining and hard-fought rounds – however most, indeed almost all, felt that Ormond deserved the win.

The Belfast lightweight dropped Ormond early, but the Dubliner came back strong and dominated much of the second half of the fight.

It was not enough though with scores for Hyland of 114-113 and a frankly ridiculous 117-110 overruling a 115-112 for Ormond.

Following the verdict there was outrage on social media among other Irish boxers.

Boxing figures from further afield also believed that Ormond deserved the decision.

Irish boxing writers also were almost unanimously in favour of Ormond.
