And The New – Ryan Burnett claims British title in Manchester

Ryan Burnett became Ireland first British champion since Martin Lindsay, who won the featherweight crown back in 2009, with an impressive display in Manchester on Saturday night.

The Belfast 23 year old buckled the strap around his waist after an impressive shut-out points win over the experienced Jason Booth.

Burnett had the former World title challenger down in the first, only for Booth to recover and make it to the bell. Indeed Booth lasted 11 more rounds, but lost every one as Burnett put on a show.

The Youth Olympic gold medalist, who was competing in just his 12th pro fight, certainly shone under the spotlight and made the wider boxing public aware of the potential he posses.

The new British champ looks set to make the first defence of his title on the massive Frampton v Quigg card in the Manchester Arena on February 27 before topping his first bill in Belfast in April.
