Agyarko To Climb To Next Level If He Passes Williamson Test

There’s been an ongoing war of words between Caoimhin Agyarko and Troy Williamson, but when the duo meet in the ring on December 2 in Belfast, the former will be aiming to defeat the latter once and for all, which should see him climb to the next level in his career.

In a show headlined by Michael Conlon and Jordan Gill, Conlon Boxing and Matchroom Boxing join forces in the joint promotion at the SSE Arena. But it’s Agyarko who will be looking to do what’s required against former British title challenger Williamson, which would see him move to 14-0, and by taking a look at most of the leading online sports betting sites, we can confirm many believe him doing so is a realistic possibility.

If Agyarko is victorious against Williamson, a man who has only ever tasted defeat on one occasion previously, at the hands of a rejuvenated Josh Kelly at Newcastle Arena, it would certainly be a statement of intent and catapult his career forward more than ever before. Agyarko’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has spoken recently about his desire for fighters to take 50-50 bouts and to be willing to roll the dice, and this is certainly what Black Thunder is doing in Belfast.

The clash between Agyarko and Williamson will happen at super welterweight, even though the former has campaigned at middleweight previously. It’s a division where Matchroom and Hearn believe they’ll be able to navigate Black Thunder towards the top end of the rankings, but that will, of course, depend on him dealing with The Trojan in Belfast, which isn’t going to be an easy task, especially as Williamson has seemingly put his reverse at the hands of Kelly behind him after winning a six rounder last time out.

Agyarko has come through recent tests against Lukasz Maciec and Grant Dennis of late, but Williamson represents the first significant step up, which the former WBA International Middleweight champion will potentially see as another stepping stone as he aims to make it to the top. He’s now been working with his coach, Joe McNally, who also trains the likes of Josh Taylor and Liam Smith, for a while, and this will give him confidence heading into what is the biggest fight of his career so far on a massive stage.

Making it past Williamson successful should open up a lot of doors for Agyarko, with one potential bout being to do what The Trojan couldn’t, and that’s to defeat Josh Kelly for the WBO International Super Welterweight title. Kelly has worked his way back up after losing to David Avanesyan and would provide another stern test of Black Thunder’s credentials.

And Agyarko doesn’t have to look far for inspiration either in his quest to collect titles at super welter, as JJ Metcalf is also working under McNally in the iconic Rotunda Gym in Kirkdale. After back-to-back defeats in 2021, Metcalf has won four from four and picked up the IBO World Super Welter belt.
