Kerry boxer Aaron McElligott got Ireland off to the best possible start today at the European Schoolboys Championships in Valcea, Romania.

The Cashen Vale slugger dominated home favourite Samuel Florin-Cimpoesu in the last 16 of the 65kg division.

After a relatively close first, McElligott hurt his opponent badly in the second and almost brought a halt to the bout in the third.

McElligott will now take on Yahor Simakou of Belarus in the quarter finals on Saturday with a bronze medal up for grabs.
