Second Captains – Mick Conlan is our Number One

It’s often said that the Irish boxing team do not get enough coverage and adulation from the mainstream media. This may be true, however there are seeds of change, such as the weekly columns from Gerry Callan, Kevin Byrne, and Eamon Carr in The Star, The Sun, and The Herald, as well as regular radio chat on Newstalk’s Off the Ball and 2FM’s Game On in particular.

Another supporter of Irish boxing is the hugely popular Second Captains podcast and this week they devoted a portion of their show to new World Champion Mick Conlan with an in-depth interview.

Afterwards, presenters Eoin McDevitt and Ciaran Murphy discussed the Belfast bantamweight, and had high praise for the 23 year old Olympic hopeful.

Indeed Murphy feels that Conlan’s 2015 achievements of Olympic qualification, European gold, and World gold, outstrip those of all other Irish sports stars, and asked the rhetorical question – “If you’re talking about the Irish Sports Personality of the Year, this year, who would it be?”

“You could craft a very very strong argument for Michael Conlan being the Irish Sports Personality of the Year”

“If you’re talking about achievement on a global scale, I don’t think you need to go a whole lot further than Michael Conlan.”
