Thomas O’Toole Waiting on Contract After Being Offered Jaime Munguia Fight

Thomas O’Toole says he is waiting to sign the contract to fight Jaime Munguia.

News leaked late last month that the Galway fighter had agreed to fight the Mexican and that a WBA super middleweight world title fight between the pair would be confirmed shortly.

However, the WBA have since ordered the world champion to defend against mandatory challenger Bektemir Melikuziev.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com, the Connemara native said he was unsure where he stood with regard to a coveted shot, but revealed there was contact and an offer in August.

“I got offered the fight in August,” ‘The Kid’ tells Irish-boxing.com.

“I said yes right away and was told I’d have a contract in 3 days. A few days passed, and I asked about the contract, and we were told he didn’t want to fight a southpaw.”

Rumour resurfaced in September that the 28-year-old had secured a shot at the Mexican, famous in Ireland for his controversial fight with Denis Hogan as well as his defeat of Gary Spike O’Sullivan.

Commenting on the excitement around that he adds: “A few weeks later, Rick Glazer announced we were fighting, and then everyone saw that. I obviously kept it all quiet because I’d had a lot of fights fall through, so until I get a contract, I don’t take it for granted.”

It appears all immediate hope is gone with Munguia ordered to fight Melikuziev, but the link and the offer are both positive for the Connacht talent.

Regardless the Boston-based boxer is hopeful he’ll get a fight a real note soon.

“It’s huge [to be in the frame for a world title fight]. I’ve been linked with a few big fights. Still, all this time sitting on the sidelines is tough. Training alone doesn’t pay any bills, and being inactive isn’t a good situation. I’m only looking for a big fight. We are looking at big fights, some with PBC, but again it’s all talk for now.”
