“No Mickey Mouse fights” – O’Leary’s Irish title plans put at risk by Treacy test

Richie O’Leary has no interest in taking the easy route to the top, with coach Peter Vrinceanu and that’s why he’s fighting Oisin Treacy next month.

The JB Promotions man is Irish title keen and has green strap plans but makes fights for the light middleweight version of the Celtic title when he takes on the Wicklow native next.

It’s another test to the popular operator’s credentials and a risk to his Irish title plans – but according to Vrinceanu, the Dubliner is exactly where he wants to be.

“He wants these types of fights. He doesn’t want any Mickey Mouse fights. He wants the massive fights,” he told Irish-boxing.com.

“Richie never said no to a fight and he was asking Oisin Treacy for a fight before this was offered.”

Vrinceanu admits the September showdown represents a tough assignment, but has complete faith in his fighter’s ability to come through it.

“It’s tough fight, but Richie’s well able. You know, he’s well able for it.”

The Celtic title is the immediate objective, but the biggest domestic prize is already on the radar.

“He wants an Irish title, but we wanted a few more fights to warm up. We have this fight and maybe then we go into the Irish title.

“We are taking small steps once they are forward steps. We don’t want to jump up too much.”

The next step, however, is certainly a significant one. Having beaten Graham McCormack in a middleweight Celtic title fight, a light middleweight win would see him Irish title primed.

A victory over Treacy would also strengthen O’Leary’s position domestically and potentially move him closer to the Irish title opportunity he and his team ultimately want.
