Team Hyland respond to Team Bates call out

Ciaran Bates versus Paul Hyland Jr makes no sense at the minute, that’s the frank assessment of the latter’s promoter Mark Dunlop.

Team Bates issued a classic ‘fight anywhere, anytime,’ plea to the Belfast lightweight earlier in the week and while Hyland’s team claim Bates doesn’t scare them, Dunlop points out the 30 year old Dubliner doesn’t offer anything worthy of tempting them into a match up.

Dunlop has the British title and Scotty Cardle in their sights and have been positioning the fighter, who loves a brawl, up the British rankings in a bid to secure him a shot at the career changing title.

Indeed, the MHD Promotions boss claims he spent Wednesday trying to get an EBU title shot for the 10-0 25 year old, stressing as Bates has yet to do eight rounds they couldn’t even make the Dublin versus Belfast clash an Irish title fight.

“We are definitely not afraid to fight Bates or any of the lightweights in Ireland, but the fight just doesn’t make sense,” says Dunlop.

“I spent Wednesday trying to get Hyland a shot at the EBU title after the news Kevin Mitchell retired and was no longer fighting for the belt. It didn’t work out, but that is the level we are at with the kid.

“Bates hasn’t fought more than four rounds as of yet. He isn’t even eligible to fight for an Irish title. ‘Hylo’ moved to 10-0 last weekend and is pushing up the British rankings. We will push to get him a British title fight. What would we benefit from a Bates figh?”
