One of the United Churches League’s remits when it began in 1948 was to focuses solely on Saturday football to allow people to play the game and still attend church.

So it seems fitting the Dublin league which concentrates exclusively on Saturday football that they have delayed the start of their league campaign due the Papal visit.

The arrival of Pope Francis to Ireland has coincided with the UCFL’s pre arranged kick off time, but the powers that be have decided to the first round of fixtures back a week.

The UCFL are not affording time for the players who compete in the league to go and catch a glimpse of the Pope, rather considering car are not being allowed dirty the red carpet that is being rolled out for the religious figure the committee believe it might prove difficult for players to make away fixtures.

The league will now kick off on Monday 26 instead, with another round of fixtures playing out on Wednesday.

“With the Papal visit on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 of August and the ensuing road closures and traffic congestion it has been decided will be set for Saturday 25 August,” confirmed the UCLF.
